Methoni Castle

Getting there

One of the great fortresses of the Mediterranean

Methoni Castle, Messinia

Ninety-three acres of walls and towers on a peninsula reaching into the sea, with the Bourtzi standing offshore.

Methoni Castle, covering approximately 93 acres, is one of the most important fortification complexes in the Mediterranean.

A fortress on a peninsula

It occupies a narrow peninsula roughly 500 metres long, with a small harbour on its eastern side.

The castle is made up of two sections: the southern area, with the walled town and its towers, and the northern rocky acropolis.

Making a day of it

Methoni Beach is right there, one part sandy and the eastern side covered with pebbles, wide and long, looking out to the islet of Sapientza and back at the castle itself.
